CBD for Skin Care

Summary of CBD Properties

Hemp has been used world-wide for a number of conditions for centuries (check out our article The Cannabis Conundrum if interested in learning a bit more about the origins of hemp). While we here at CBD Vape Genius have already gone over the benefits of including CBD into your health routine (CBD in Depth for a little refresher), one thing we haven’t yet touched on is the potential for CBD-infused products to help improve overall skin health! With laws finally being pushed through that distinguish the differences between cannabis and hemp and effectively legalize it, hemp oil is now being incorporated into products in the health and beauty market- and for good reason.

Why CBD for Skin Care?

Dealing with and treating troubled skin is something that many of us have had to go through during adolescence and even well into adulthood. The American Academy of Dermatology reports that 50 million Americans are affected by acne annually. Although the majority of sufferers are under the age of 24, approximately 15% of those afflicted are adults.
With that in mind, CBD has a few things going for it when it comes to maintaining healthy skin and helping to clear up existing conditions. Studies have shown cannabinoids possessing high anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which are great for neutralizing damaging free radicals that are bombarding us throughout the day in the form of sunlight, pollution, cigarette smoke, and more.
Now I’d like to take brief pause from the main article and quickly go over what free radicals actually are for those unaware.
Our bodies are under constant attack from oxidative stress, or when oxygen in the body splits into single atoms with unpaired electrons. Electrons like to be in pairs, so these atoms, called free radicals, scavenge the body to seek out other electrons so they can become a pair. This causes damage to cells, proteins and DNA.

Leslie Baumann, M.D., a dermatologist in Miami, says that “[when left] unchecked, those free radicals are bouncing around, damaging collagen and spurring hyperpigmentation. Stopping them ensures that your skin stays firm, even, and smooth.” She also states that “antioxidants can reverse dark marks, accelerate healing, and keep your complexion acne-free.”

Hemp oil also contains Omega-3 and Omega-3 fatty acids which serve as the essential building blocks of skin’s surface layers, helping to create a smoother, younger-looking, healthier complexion.

A few noted benefits that topical application of healthy omega fatty acids can do for your skin are:

  • Reinforce and smooth skin’s surface.
  • Increase hydration of the skin.
  • Calm signs of external stressors, including redness and sensitivity.
  • Eliminate signs of flaky, dehydrated-looking skin.
  • Visibly strengthen skin against signs of environmental damage.
  • Deliver antioxidants for anti-aging results.
